Purpose

The bin removal Ad-Hoc committee was first formed in 2019 when the news broke that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment mandated that lakeside garbage bins that did not meet ministry standards were to be removed by 2023. (In 2019 Cathy Dunphy and Richard Steimers spearheaded a proposal to the District to stop the bin removal on Kahshe Lake but had no success.) Kahshe Lake, however, lost all its bins in early May of 2022.

Goal

To stop the bin removal if possible and, if not, to help Kahshe Lake cottages have the best possible solution for waste pick up on the Lake.

Outcome

In 2022, Garbage Pick occurred at Nagaya Road near the private docking area on early Sunday afternoon and at the Klueys Bay Government docking area from May 24 weekend until Thanksgiving weekend.  Due to difficulty docking and low numbers in 2022, Klueys Bay Government dock became the only pickup area for the lake in 2023. Hours were extended and a Wednesday pick-up was added. The South Kahshe Lake Road garbage pick-up was extended down the South Road in 2022 and La Roger Road also received Garbage pick-up.

The Housey Rapids Waste Depot application was sent to the Ontario Government for reopening in 2024. Approval is still to be determined. The District staff responsible for the transition continues to listen to KBLA committee members and any surveys completed in the past and the future. Cottagers with concerns can contact the District Waste Department directly and discuss with the KBLA Committee members as needed.
