Dorene Emily Jacobs (Apr 21, 1926 — Apr 22, 2016)
Dorene was a long-time member of the KLRA, keeping her membership up until 2014 and attending the AGM meetings whenever she could. She was a very active member of the First Unitarian Church on St. Clair in Toronto and those members supported her well in her later years.
In the late '60s or early '70s, she bought Grant Thompson's Island in the little bay west of Grant's Bay where the southern dam is. (This is where Grant's Bay got its name.) She camped on it for years entertaining her friends from the church and coming to know all the cottagers around Grant's Bay, including the MacLean family who were also camping in the channel at this time. She attended many Grant Bay functions — the Regatta and the Grant Bay Wine and Cheese Party held every August 1st weekend right up until 2014 even though she had sold her island and began to rent at places like Rockhaven, and Silver Pines.
She was a great supporter of the Kahshe Country Craft Show and was on its volunteer committee for some time, and when the Opera House in Gravenhurst had an active repertory theater group, she supported that by volunteering as an usher. Dorene enjoyed traveling especially in Ontario and wrote articles for the weekender paper, reporting on local festivals, B&Bs, and various craze and art shows. She was also an early computer user, leaving her job in her 40s to go back to university to take computer courses. After that, she worked for the Ontario Arts Council. She was a busy lady who led an interesting life, loved Kahshe Lake, and visited a lot of her friends right up to last summer. Dorene was still driving around on her own in her 89th year. She passed away the day after her 90th birthday.
