Rock Marker Committee Update Spring 2023

Marnie Cryderman, Rock Chair, KBLA
May 1, 2023

Soon all of the rock markers will be installed for the 2023 Season. Many thanks to the following volunteers for installing the spherical balls that mark Kahshe Lake rocks in the main navigation channels:

  • John Thompson and Jim Butler — South End
  • Andrew and Jonathan Sawicki — East End
  • Keith Martin and Rob Pinard — Grant's Bay
  • Mueller - Hill Family — East of Burnt Island, West of Lindhill Island, South of Rockhaven

As many of you saw, Bailey's Barge installed the lighted columnar towers this past Sunday. Since the fall of 2021, the KBLA has hired Bailey's Barge Services to remove (after Thanksgiving) and install (before Victoria Day weekend) these lighted towers in our lake. Previously, volunteers placed them in the water in the spring and removed them in the fall. However, the weight and size of these columnar towers make this task difficult. So we have hired out this job to Bailey's Barge and used KBLA funds to pay for the service.

New Permanent Towers Coming Soon

There are plans in the works to add four more permanent lighted towers on the lake this summer. The proposed locations of these towers are:

  1. Beside Chief Island — The floating lighted tower will be replaced with a spherical ball and a permanent lighted tower will be installed on the larger rock that is above water to the east. This will mark the turn to go down to Grant's Bay. Boaters will need to stay to the west and note the location of the spherical ball to avoid the rock.
  2. To the southwest of Anderson Island — As you turn from the main east-west channel to go towards Rockhaven. Again, the floating lighted tower will be replaced with a spherical ball and a new permanent tower will be installed on the rocks above the water, to the northwest.
  3. To the south of Hilda and Grandview Islands on the mainland — This will make navigating through this narrow part of the lake easier when the sun has set for the day.
  4. North end of Boyd Island — Currently, a spherical ball marks this location but in the past, a floating lighted tower has been installed. Again, this will make navigation through the main east-west channel and around Boyd Island easier for boaters and water-access cottagers.
