Anton Muhitch (1910 — Aug 21, 2011)
On August 21, 2011, at the age of 101, our dad, Anton Muhitch passed away at the Hillcrest Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. Dad grew up in an area of Austria much like Muskoka, but steeper and higher by far. He made his own skis and skied to school in winter. In fact, he was probably a world-class skier much like other Austrian boys that come out of the mountains. He also designed and made wagons to haul large quantities of lumber from the forests, and often went on logging teams himself. And so, he was an expert in culling his little woodlot on Sam Cook Rd.
He first came to Housey's Rapids in 1962 to the St. Francis Church, Toronto summer camp which would become Teopoli in 1967. With an amazing variety of carpentry skills, he built the chapel at the camp, while my mother cooked meals for the children who came to slip-slide the waterfall and torment the mosquitos.
In the early 70’s he turned his unflagging energy to the extending of his newly acquired cottage on Sam Cook Road. A skillful inventor, artist, and entrepreneur, he was possessed of vigor and courage well into his nineties. Our dad liked to challenge people, and he leaves many deep memories of his character and charity.
