Freddy Grossman (1923 — May 13, 2013)
Freddy Grossman of Oak Road passed away peacefully, in his sleep, on May 13, 2013, at the age of 89. The Grossman family has been on Kahshe since 1980. Freddy took great pride in preserving and enhancing his beautiful log and stone cottage which was built nearly 100 years ago. He retired at 66 and spent every summer on Kahshe with his wife Shirley and family.
Friends and neighbors will remember that music was always playing and a drink was always offered at Freddy’s place. Freddy was the “1944 Jitter Bug Champion of Toronto” and Saturday evening was Swing night at the Grossman’s with the likes of Arty Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington being played and danced to until dark.
Freddy also took pride in teaching his grandchildren how to swim and dive. No tens were given unless your toes were pointed and the water was ripple-free. The “cottage” is not the same without him but his energy and spirit are everywhere. The music plays on to the next generation who still love to mix it up to “One O’clock Jump” and “In The Mood.”
