Water Access Committee Update Spring 2023

Henry Kowalewski, Water Access Chair, KBLA
May 1, 2023

Following last year‘s lakeside collection, the District asked for feedback from the Kahshe Lake community and the KLRA Waste Management Committee. We met with the District in February to discuss the plans for the 2023 collection season. The District also collected information from the lakeside events and the online survey.

During the meeting, discussion took place about the issues that had occurred in the past summer at the Nagaya dock collection site and plans for going forward.

Issues noted were:

Complaints arose from cottagers whose boat slips were being occupied by other boats using their slips at collection time. There was also congestion in the parking lot and on the Nagaya Road.

Complaints were also noted that it was a private parking lot and docking was not available for all residents to access the collection.

As a result, the District preference is to try this summer for a longer collection time on Sunday ONLY (no Saturday) from 1 to 4 PM at the Rockhaven Government Dock and then have a Wednesday collection from 10 to 11:30 AM also at Rockhaven.

The Riley Lake depot license has been applied for and plans to reopen should happen in 2024.

At Larroger Road roadside pick-up began on Monday, May 22nd.

Beiers Road Depot is open throughout the week and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 AM until 8 PM.

Green Bins are available at the depot for roadside collection. Unfortunately at this time, they are not for any cottager using lakeside collection.  If you are using the green bin, the District would like to know how it is going.

Here’s what we are allowed per week for waste collection:

  • 2 garbage bags per week
  • Unlimited recycling in clear bags or open top box
  • 2 clear bags of diapers
  • 2 garbage bags and 1 clear diaper bag on non-collection days (Beiers Road only)
  • Additional waste, the ticket cost will be 5 for $35.00 or $8.00 each

The District has asked for your feedback on what’s working and what’s not. You may contact them at: waste@muskoka.on.ca or 705-645-2100.
